Legends are not born but made. One such self-made legend is Dr. Yogesh Praveen, who is still on his journey of taking forth his legacy. Being an eminent writer, an imaginative story teller, a sensitive poet, an accomplished essayist and a lively orator, Dr. Praveen is a man with a treasure house of talent. He has dedicated his 78 years of life in boosting his native land – the Nawabi City, Lucknow and is still busy in writing some iconic poetry and books.

Dr. Praveen was born on 28th October in 1939 and has multi-lingual knowledge with Masters in Hindi and Sanskrit, followed by a doctorate in Literature from Meerut University. Every iconic personality has an inspiration which sparks the fire within him. In the case of Dr. Praveen, it was his mother Late Mrs. Rama Srivastava, an eminent poetess of her times who inspired him towards love for poetry and writing. Since then, Dr. Praveen has never taken a step back in fulfilling his love for words, culture, and his roots. Dr. Praveen is the author of a range of books, some of his famous writings include Dastan-e-Avadh, Tajdar-e-Avadh, Dastan-e-Lucknow. Among his poetic creations are – Shabnam (Urdu), Peele Gulab (Urdu), Anjuman (Ghazals) and Sumanhar. He has been honored with Bal Krishna Sharma Naveen Award for Mayur Pankh in 1973 and Tulsi Award of U.P. Hindi Sansthan of the book Aprajita. He has also served as an editor for Lucknow Mahotsava magazine, Urmila, for twenty-five years. Being an orator, he has also proved his coin for 35 years as an expert talker in feature and dramas for Akashvani on radio. Some famous Bollywood movies like Shatranj ke Khiladi, Junoon, Umrao Jaan & Zahre Ishq are credited with his research. His lyrics have been sung by some of the top Bollywood singers, like Asha Bhosle, Sudha Malhotra, Anoop Jalota and Udit Narayan.

He also writes plays which are still being performed all over India as stage shows to entice and allure the audience. The other awards which Dr. Praveen bagged include U.P. Sangeet Natak Academy Award (1998), National Teachers Award (1999), U.P. Ratna Award (200), Kala Bhushan Samman by U.P. govt., Hindi Sansthan (2002) and Yash Bharati Award (2006). Indeed, Dr. Praveen is an inspiration for the people of Uttar Pradesh and beyond. One of his fond Shayari on Lucknow proves his love for his land –

“Yeh sach hai zinda-dili ki koi kitaab hai tu,
Adab ka Husn-o-Hunar ka haseen shabab hai tu,
Sar-e-chaman tera jalwa hai wo gulaab hai tu,
Lucknow ab bhi duniya mein lajawaab hai tu.”

Along with his enduring works, Dr. Praveen, splashes wonder with his sober yet entertaining personality. Every bit of his soul speaks the language of tehzeeb & nawabiyat of Lucknow. Recently, we met him and found him no less wonderful than his poetries. He wins over every one with his humble and kind self. He talks and talks a lot and shares his some of the most intriguing stories and experiences. One cannot help but gets immersed in his beautiful words, shayaris and captivating storytelling.

He fondly talks about the rise of fine Arts and ‘Ganga-Jamuna’ culture in Uttar Pradesh. He narrates various historical events around the glorious golden era of Avadh.

Dr. Yogesh Praveen is an indeed a living legend of Lucknow, full of zeal and life to achieve more. In spite of an endless list of his accomplishments, this legend never sits back. His gleaming eyes and never-ending urge to keep alive the flame of his talents inspire others to never stop dreaming.
