Travelling on your own can be a hassle on its own but travelling with kids is a whole different ball game. You have to factor in the child’s needs and moods. You are also highly responsible for their wellbeing. There is more to this than just stopping for toilet breaks or buying them their favorite snack. It is about proper planning and execution. Here are 10 kids-friendly experiences in Uttar Pradesh that will make them appreciate culture and life –

  1. Lucknow Zoo – We know you are not surprised to see this first on the list. After all one can never go wrong with zoos when it comes to keeping kids engaged and happy. The name of this zoo was Prince of Wales Zoological Garden which was changed to the current name which is – Nawab Wazid Ali Shah Prani Udyan. This zoo was established in 1921 to commemorate Prince of Wales’ visit to Lucknow. Here one can find a variety of exotic animals and birds. White Tigers, Elephants, Swamp deer and rhinoceros are some of the inhabitants here. The zoo is very popular as a picnic spot for the locals. Inside the Zoo there is a Folk Art Museum that would appeal to older kids. This museum houses many sculptures and artefacts including an Egyptian Mummy! Also, within the grounds of the zoo is a Foreign Sculptural Art Gallery housing impressive statues of Queen Victoria, King George the fifth among others.


  1. Indira Gandhi Planetarium, Lucknow – The first thing you notice about this planetarium in Lucknow is the shape of the building itself. The building is shaped like the planet Saturn which serves as a teaser of what is inside. Inside there are daily shows on the Universe which can be enjoyed by both children and adults. This astronomical film is projected three times a day and lasts for 45 minutes each. There is also a small exhibition gallery inside where models of famous space missions and rockets are at display. Only the 1PM shows on weekends are in English and others are in Hindi.


  1. Allen Forest Zoo, Kanpur – This is a big zoo complete with a toy train ride and much more. Kids would love it here. This zoo is named after George Burney Allen who was a British Industrialist. This is a large forest area which has been enclosed and converted into a zoo hence the word ‘Forest’ in the name. Some animals are allowed to roam free here adding to the forest feels. This large zoo houses sloths, chimpanzees, leopards, tigers, elephants. It is advised to arrive with plans to spend major part of the day here. Plastic and polythene are not allowed inside the premises. Other attractions here include an aviary, a lake, an aquarium, a botanical garden and life sized dinosaur sculptures.


  1. Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary – Located 45kms southwest of Lucknow this bird sanctuary was established in 1984. It consists of a shallow lake and a lush forest. This makes for a protective shelter of choice for many local and migrating birds. During the winter season many migratory birds make a stay here. These include graylag goose, red- crested pochard, knob-billed duck, mallard, northern shoveller and many more. There is an information center where a model of the sanctuary is displayed along with literature and information with pictures of the birds seen at the sanctuary. There is also a small deer park nearby.



  1. Dudhwa Tiger Reserve – Home to three different sanctuaries the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve is an exciting place for kids and adults alike. Here one can take an elephant Safari in search of the Bengal Tiger. The thick Sal forests of the region make for a nice home for the one horned rhinoceros and the Swamp deer. Dudhwa is open to public from November to June only. It requires a couple of days to properly explore the Dudhwa National Park itself. Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary and Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary are nearby and are worth visiting.


  1. Saryu Boat Ride, Faizabad – If you can’t interest the kids in the temples of Ayodhya you can take them on a boat ride in the River Saryu in Faizabad to show them around and also have fun while doing it.


  1. Wildlife SOS- Just outside Agra is the bear rescue facility that is open to the public. Kids will love visiting here. The bears at the rehabilitation center here are rescued from being performing bears which is an illegal activity of animal cruelty. This facility houses more than 220 bears. You can even spend a day here as a volunteer. It’s best to visit during feeding times at 8am, 12pm and 4pm and watch the bears devour all their food. Also, nearby is an Elephant rescue center. It is best to setup an appointment beforehand.


  1. Boat Ride at Varanasi – Boat rides are always fun. A boat ride on the holy waters of the Ganga will enable your kids to see the city older than time itself in its full glory. The site at the Ghats is something you can never see anywhere else and would surely interest the kids. You can see priests performing their ceremonies and people taking dips at the Ghats.


  1. Taj Mahal on a full moon night – Kids might be interested in spending much time in front of brightly lit screens but they will be mesmerized by the Taj Mahal lit on a bright full moon night. Entries are limited though and one has to buy tickets one day in advance.


  1. Ram Lila shows, Ramnagar- The kids would enjoy the theatrical depiction of the epic of Ramayana that happens at Ramnagar in a grand and authentic way. This takes place opposite to the Ghats of Varanasi in Ramnagar. With big venues, ever changing stages and episodic month long performances kids will be left mesmerized.
